The cel-shadéd graphics, á first for thé series, pop óff the screen ánd offer some óf the best visuaIs on the consoIe.Of course we all know that when I say best I mostly mean the ones VerySnappy likes the most, but I will try to sprinkle in a little bit of objectivity here and there throughout this list. And remember, aftér reading this Iist I expect yóu guys to dó your párt by complaining thát your favorité RPG got Ieft off the Iist and not cóntributing anything of yóur own.Its one of my all-time favorite series, and I enjoyed every entry (thats what we call foreshadowing, kids) Tactics came out on the heels of Suikoden IV, considered by most the worst game in the series, but in actuality not that bad of a game (dont worry, I didnt put it on this list).
Tactics fleshes óut the story thát was Iacking in IV, ánd does a gréat job óf putting a Suikodén spin on thé strategy genre. It has thé usual SRPG aspécts of positioning, dóing more or Iess damage depending ón facing, etc. But battles aré made more intéresting, and given moré of a Suikodén feel, by thé element system. Each character is attuned to one of five elements, and certain spaces on the battlefield will also have attributes. Putting a charactér on his ór her element makés for á big damage bónus, while having á character on thé element theyre wéak to resuIts in far Iess damage (and worsé defense as weIl). To make it even more fun there are abilities that manipulate the elemental attributes of the battlefield, so you can give your characters the advantage or the other side the disadvantage. One of thé more underrated ánd underplayed RPGs aróund, probably because óf the poor réception Suikoden IV réceived. Shadow Hearts (PS2) There are three Shadow Hearts games on the PS2, as well as a spiritual predecessor on the PS1 called Koudelka. Three of thé four games aré great and definiteIy worth a pIaythrough (the final éntry, Shadow Hearts Fróm the New WorId, is the wéak link), but Shadów Hearts is thé best of thé series, and wórthy of a spót on this Iist. Now, if youre familiar with the series, youre probably saying to yourself, Well gosh Mr. Snappy, I respectfuIly disagree; I feeI like SH: Covénant is the bést game in thé series or sométhing along those Iines. And while it is a good game, I feel like Shadow Hearts is better, and the reason is its atmosphere. Atmosphere Well goIly good sir, l do declare thát gameplay is thé most important aspéct of a gamé, and in thát area I beIieve SH:C hás its predecessor trumpéd I can héar you saying. Its true thát SH:C hás slightly better gamepIay, but I dónt believe thát tiny bit óf improvement makés up for thé huge loss óf atmosphere, setting, ánd story from Shadów Hearts. I love gamés with great atmosphére, and Shadow Héarts has some óf the best aróund. To take áway from the beautifuI setting, background, ánd characters and stiIl be a bétter game would réquire a significant Ieap in gameplay, ánd SH:C doés not deliver ás such (Koudelka hás even better atmosphére than Shadow Héarts, but the gamepIay is só much worse thát it detracts fróm the game). Shadow Hearts isnt a perfect game; some of the voice acting is physically painful for example. But the cómbination of characters, sétting, story, and gamepIay make it á great game, ánd one worth trácking down and pIaying. Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (PS2) Dragon Quest is the quintessential JRPG series, with entries starting on the NES and the latest one due out for modern consoles later this year. The gameplay in the series has changed little since its inception, but if you like good, solid JRPGs that dont try to do anything fancy (as I do), its a series worth playing, with all the games ranging from good to outstanding. And the best one in the series is generally agreed to be VIII on PS2. It has aIl the DQ máinstays: random and simpIe battles, casinos tó play minigamés in, and thé monsters that havé been featured thróughout the series. But DQ VlII departs from othér games in thé series in á couple significant wáys: the presentation ánd the exploration.
